Memory and Oblivion in the Environment of Noble Families in the Fourteenth Century
Abstract. This paper examines the questions of memory and oblivion in the environment of noble families in fourteenth-century Transylvania and the Banat. The paper presents briefly the various concepts of memory proposed in the scholarly literature and discusses a few instances of collective and communicative memory usage in the context of medieval Transylvania and the Banat. The case of remembering the 1277 burning of the cathedral church in Alba Iulia at subsequent moments – 1308–1309 and 1344 – is discussed along with other examples in order to illustrate how communicative, collective and cultural memory were employed in reconstructing and evoking significant past events in the history of Transylvania or the memory and oblivion of important landed acquisitions in the case of noble families.
