The Conservation and Restoration of a Gothic Portal Surround Fragment from the Northern Façade of the Roman Catholic Church in Turda
Abstract. Turda’s Roman Catholic church, anchoring the northern edge of the central square, is a key monument of Transylvanian Late Gothic architecture. Epigraphic and structural evidence places its construction in the late fifteenth century. Later conflicts and repairs led to Baroque interventions (1793–1831) and an 1822 remodelling that reshaped the western façade and impacted the northern portal. Crafted in the early sixteenth century, this portal unites shouldered arches with refined floral and Stabwerk ornamentation, while its lintel reflects early Renaissance influences. A displaced portal fragment, long held by the Turda History Museum, underwent technical, structural and stylistic assessment. Conservation and restoration followed an interdisciplinary diagnostic framework: material characterization, deterioration mapping and evaluation of incompatible earlier repairs. The intervention stabilized the stone and improved legibility, supporting art–historical interpretation and future monitoring.
