Restoration of the Icon on Wood of Saint Thomas the Apostle
Abstract. The icon whose restoration is presented in this study was part of the frieze of the apostles in the wooden church in Comănești, Gorj County, which was transferred to the Open-Air Museum in Dumbrava Sibiului. The icon on wood of Saint Thomas the Apostle, dating from the nineteenth century and part of the ASTRA Museum collection, has benefitted from restoration interventions within the ASTRA Centre for Heritage. The restoration procedures respected the principle of minimum intervention, taking into account the huge losses at the level of the painting layers. In order to establish the right diagnostic and the restoration interventions, chemical and biological investigations have been carried out. Students from the Conservation and Restoration Specialization within the Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu were involved in the restoration process.
