Case Study on the Restoration of a Glass Icon from the Collection of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant
Abstract.
The glass icon “The Ascension of Jesus Christ to Heaven” discussed in this study belongs to the collection of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant and is classified in the Treasure category. We attribute the work to the painter Petru Tămaș the Elder. This article presents the icon’s conservation state and the restoration process, which involved cleaning and consolidating the paint layer with an egg-yolk emulsion, performing chromatic integration, reinforcing the frame joints, and integrating small wooden additions. The icon was secured in its frame using thin pieces of synthetic felt adhered to the frame groove with transparent hot-melt adhesive. Finally, we offer recommendations aligned with restoration standards for optimal storage conditions and appropriate display methods.

Keywords: reverse painting on glass, the Ascension, restoration, chromatic integration, consolidation.
